Every summer, Libro.fm does a GREAT summer audiobook sale and I always end up snagging several audiobooks I’ve been wanting to listen to because the prices are so good — most under $5 with many less than $1. I have a whole post all about Libro.fm and why I love it, but basically, I like supporting indie bookstores; the audio quality is better than Everand (which I also love), and you can download the audiobook files and load them onto your Yoto player if you have one.

What to buy in this year’s Libro.fm sale
I just bought FIVE excellent audiobooks for under $7! Here are the audiobooks I bought/would recommend buying this year:
Maybe It’s a Sign
Published: January 23, 2024
I really liked this one. Freya’s doting dad was really into Chinese superstitions until he died suddenly several months ago. Now a 7th grader, Freya lives by the same superstitions her dad did as a way to keep him close. But when they start to impact her ability to live a full life, she has to reconsider how much control she’s giving them. Grief plays a major role but this is not sopping sad. Freya develops a sweet young romance with a male classmate that adds levity, and Freya’s anxiety about disappointing her dad is well-addressed. Ages 10+

The Vanderbeekers to the Rescue
Published: September 17, 2019
The Vanderbeekers are having a great spring break. For one, their mom has just been offered a magazine feature about her baking business. Oliver is building his first-ever tree house, and Isa’s finally home from band camp. But just when the excitement begins to feel legitimate, the Vanderbeeker kids make a mistake that endangers their mom’s business. Now, they have to scramble to fix things before mom discovers — and before her magazine shoot date. I’m a huge fan of this series. This is book three, and book two is also on sale here! Ages 8+

The Candymakers
Published: October 5, 2010
This charming classic is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets The Mysterious Benedict Society. It follows four kids in a competition to invent the next great confection in the country. They each have secrets of their own, and we hear from each kid’s perspective about what went down during the contest. Although this is a longer book, kids who like chunky books will find this mystery charming and thrilling. Ages 9+

Mac B. Kid Spy
Published: October 13, 2020
This hilarious spy story of a boy recruited by the Queen of England to retrieve England’s crown jewels is ridiculous in the best way. The illustrations and humor in this one make it perfect for young readers who love funny chapter books. Ages 7+

Answers to Dog
Published: October 1, 2024
This story is about Evan, a moody middle schooler whose days consist of trying to figure out why his mom is always grumpy, defending his besties from the school bully, and trying to bond with his artist father. Until he meets a dog, or rather, the dog finds him. Told from the perspectives of Evan and the dog, a clever border collie with a love for running, this soaring, heartwarming adventure about friendship, family, and the healing power of dogs is perfect for fans of Silvey’s The Underdogs of Upson Downs. Ages 9+

Krista Kim-Bap
Published: October 1, 2024
Krista is an almost-12-year-old living in Vancouver, Canada. Although both of her parents are Korean, Krista’s mom does not cook a lot of Korean food. After wearing a modernized hanbok Tori makes for her to a party with the popular girls in her school, the girls and their leader Madison suddenly want to be friends with Krista. All the while, Krista is working hard to come up with a project for their class Heritage Month project. She’s nervous about being asked too many questions about Korean culture aka being the “Korean Ambassador.” This is an endearing middle-grade book that features a sweet sister relationship, a loving Korean grandma, healthy school friendships, and lots of food! If you’re looking for a feel-good middle-grade book with a dash of humor, you will absolutely enjoy this one. Ages 9+

The Trouble with Heroes
Published: April 29, 2025
This is an incredible (mostly) verse novel about a boy who vandalizes a gravestone of a 46er Adirondack woman and is tasked with hiking all 46 peaks as reparations. I read this one from start to finish in a single day, and I loved the multiple formats — written in posters, pictures, text messages, letters, recipes, and yes, verse. Finn is angry a lot, and the hike introduces him to people who knew his dad and a slobbery dog, Seymour. This one combines adventure, heart, mystery, suspense, and flashbacks beautifully. It’s just really clever, has a strong kid appeal, and is full of emotional depth. Ages 10+

The A&A Detective Agency (The Fairfleet Affair #1)
Published: April 14, 2020
Asha and Alex are two besties who’ve founded a detective agency. Their first real gig comes when the beloved eccentric chairman of a museum in their small town goes missing, sending a note to three of his board members, one employee, and the A&A Agency to find him before 2 weeks are up. The kids jump into the investigation, talking to the Archivist and the other three members of the board to track down Mr. Fairfleet and revealing many secrets about the billionaire and his board members, and testing Asha and Alex’s friendship in the process. The A&A Detective Agency #1 (The Fairfleet Affair) is a quirky mystery about museums, friendship, and community, perfect for the artsy crowd who can handle a slower-paced story. Ages 9+

Not If You Break Up with Me First
Published: June 4, 2024
This is a hilarious, sweet, romantic comedy about Eve and Andrew who’ve been besties like their mothers their whole lives. But the summer before 8th grade, something changes. Before they know it, the two are in a relationship. Soon after though, things start getting weird. Fully under the public eye, Eve and Andrew realize that maybe being friends is better but who’s going to break up with the other if neither wants to hurt each other and both want their friendship to stay intact? So they both start a campaign to do everything each hates, led on by bad advice from friends to incite the other to break up with them. Soon though, their break up campaigns start eating away at the heart of their actual friendship. This was just such a romp of a story and the only prank related story I’ve actually enjoyed. Ages 10+

One Big Open Sky
Published: July 23, 2024
I LOVED this verse novel told from the perspective of young Lettie, her mother Sylvie, and a teenage teacher, Philomena, about their perilous journey from 1870s Mississippi to Nebraska during the Great Migration. With narrators of varying ages, this suspenseful, at times heartbreaking story has plenty to offer readers between the ages of 9 and 13 and would make a great read-aloud for families with older kids.

Birdie’s Billions
Published: December 14, 2021
Birdie Loggerman’s life becomes complicated when she finds half a million dollars — cash — in an abandoned house. Her mom is a cleaner currently out of work because Birdie’s damaged property in her last client’s house. And Birdie’s best friend’s mother views her with disdain because she’s one of the poorer kids living in their highbrow area. So when Birdie finds all this money (she’s been praying for, no less), should she keep it? Or does finders, keepers not apply in this case? This is a unique, absorbing, middle grade novel about poverty, moral dilemmas and class privilege. Ages 10+

In an insane twist, she wakes up in Jessica’s body. Worse still, Jenna’s body has ceased to exist. As she begins anew in Jessica’s body, Jenna quickly realizes that the grass isn’t greener on the other side, but can she get her life back? Liang explores the idea that the grass is perhaps not greener on the other side in a chilling, relatable, and accessible teen voice. Ages 12+

Birds on the Brain
Published: August 6, 2024
This second book in the Book Uncle series takes us back to India as bird lover Reeni attempts to partake in a bird count in her city with her best friend Yasmin, but faces some obstacles. The two girls have to work hard to make their voices heard despite the mayor’s seeming disinterest in their cause. Reeni also tackles some friendship issues, including having differing interests from one of her best friends, and she goes behind her parents’ backs to use a cellphone belonging to their school bus driver. This book transported me to India and is perfect for fans of books set in Asia, birding-related books, and friendship stories — and you don’t need to have read the first book to follow the plot.

When Sea Becomes Sky
Published: February 28, 2023
This environmental mystery about two siblings and their summer discovery is highly engaging and also heartbreaking. Ages 9+

The Mystery of Locked Rooms
Published: April 2, 2024
When 7th grader Sarah is faced with the prospect of losing her home, she decides to team up with her two friends, who are also escape room fans, to crack the codes and break out of a 1950s fun house. Suspense, adventure, riddles, puzzles, thrills, and, surprisingly, a lot of heart make this story a winner for young readers. Although Sarah and her friends are older, this is a great story that will appeal to readers as young as 4th or 5th grade. Kids who enjoy books with puzzle-solving or escape room settings will love this one. Ages 9+

Nala Robertson is a big Black girl who lives with her cousin Imani and Imani’s parents. When Nala attends Imani’s birthday open-mic night, she meets a charismatic young man named Tye. Tye is also an activist who is immediately drawn to Nala. Nala is eager to impress and starts a series of lies, telling Tye that she is a vegan and pretending to be active in community work at her grandmother’s home for the elderly. The two soon start dating, but the relationship is obviously built on lies. Nala quickly becomes uncomfortable, worrying that Tye only likes her for the fake persona she created. This is a thoughtful, sweet ode to embracing and loving oneself Ages 11+

Faker
Published: July 2, 2024
My favorite Korman book yet. It’s about Trey and his conman father, who moves from town to town, scamming wealthy people in his orbit under the claim that the rich won’t miss their money. At first, Trey admires his father’s scamming skills, viewing him as smart, but when they move to Boxelder, a town with a rich area called The Pointe, Trey finds friends with whom he really gets along, and starts getting concerned about his father’s schemes. This is a solid, suspenseful mystery about ethics when it’s right to steal, activism, changing your mind, morality, and growing up. It will make a great discussion book and fans of Korman’s books will gobble it up. Ages 10+
Too Small Tola and the Three Fine Girls
I loved the first Tola book and have been meaning to read the next two books in the series, so I was happy to get this one (and book three) on audio since my audio TBR moves faster than print! Atinuke’s writing is absolutely darling.
The Braid Girls
Published: June 13, 2023
Maggie’s summer is off to a rocky start when her parents announce that she has a half-sister—a daughter her father never knew about until now. Callie’s presence throws off soft-spoken Maggie’s dynamic with her outspoken best friend Daija, even more when Callie joins their hair-braiding business. I loved this sweet, relatable middle grade book about sisterhood, entrepreneurship, and finding your voice. This book shines in its realistic portrayal of familial complexities and the ups and downs of friendship, and the audiobook has three narrators — one for each girl. Ages 9+
Where the Water Takes Us
Published: July 4, 2023
Ava’s mom is on bed rest about to have twins, so Ava’s been sent to her grandparents’ lake house. There, she witnesses the death of a bird, and after her Nonna unknowingly mentions that dead birds can signify a curse, Ava is convinced that something bad will happen to her mom unless she does a good deed of caring for two newly hatched chicks. Where The Water Takes Us is a gentle, sensitive book, perfect for anxious kids desperate to control life’s many uncertainties. I enjoyed this one on audio! Ages 9+

Jojo vs. Middle School (Team Awkward #1)
Published: February 11, 2025
Jojo is fresh into middle school and dealing with life changes, such as her mom moving her and her older brother Sam into her cat influencer boyfriend’s place. Her first day of middle school is a collection of small catastrophes until she meets three other awkward girls in a cordoned area of the school building that becomes their hideout. From bobcat hunting to secret sharing and plenty of laughs, the first two days of middle school are an awkward, hilarious adventure for all four girls. This was just a pleasure to read. I like that it’s short, will appeal to younger middle grade readers, is lighthearted, and is the first in a series in which each book will be told from a different girl’s perspective. Perfect for fans of The Baby-Sitters Club and the Gigi Shin series! Ages 9+
Not Starring Zadie Louise
Published: June 21, 2022
There’s one thing to note about this summer’s theater show: it will be NOT starring Zadie Louise. Because of tight financial circumstances, Zadie’s summer activities have all been replaced with helping out (or at least trying not to cause a disaster) in the theater where her mom directs plays. Unlike her older sister, Zadie is not interested in acting and would rather hang out with the lights and tech crew, but it seems that she ruins everything she touches! This is a funny, relatable summer read that tackled the real issue of familial financial insecurity.

Published: April 15, 2025
Benny is a boy with Mosaic Down Syndrome living in Newfoundland, Canada. He lives with his mom in the nursing home they run and is entering mainstream school for the first time. Fortunately, he meets and befriends a new girl called Salma on his first day. This is a charming, cozy mystery for fans of small towns and underdog triumphs. Ages 8+

Amina has never been comfortable in the spotlight. She is happy just hanging out with her best friend, Soojin. Except now that she’s in middle school everything feels different. Soojin is suddenly hanging out with Emily, one of the “cool” girls in the class, and even talking about changing her name to something more “American.” Does Amina need to start changing too?
