As a huge fan of contemporary fiction, middle-grade historical fiction is probably the only kind of historical fiction I enjoy -- and it's taken me a while to get to this point. These historical fiction books for middle schoolers present history in a highly appealing format. On this list, you'll find some of my favorite historical fiction recommendations for readers in grades 3-8. It goes without saying that no two 7th graders are the same, so each of these books will appeal to different kinds of readers. You know how I feel about 6th grade books -- I think they're the middle grade sweet spot and most middle grade authors write for this age group. It's no wonder there are so many fantastic historical fiction books to recommend to them! Many of these are set in the 1940s and 1950s but you'll find a couple set in the 80s and 90s and one set in 1911, too!

The stories on this list are those I've handpicked to match the interests, reading levels, and overall appropriateness level of the average 5th grader. For these age-based recommendations, I tend to choose books with characters around that age and stories in which the plot includes age-appropriate elements. I also usually choose shorter books for younger kids.

If you like YA and historical fiction, then you'll enjoy these best YA historical fiction books! I was pleasantly surprised to discover that YA authors do write historical fiction. Sadly, I feel like it's one of those genres that don't get as much love as they should. I can understand why contemporary settings might appeal more, and looking at many of these YA historical fiction books, their covers do skew a bit darker, which might be a reason why they may not get picked up as often?

Anyway, I've rounded up 30 exceptional options, many of which are tied to historical events, but feature teens just like the teens in contemporary YA.
