20 Early Graphic Novels for Younger Readers Ages 5-9

By now, you should know my feelings about graphic novels, but this list of the best graphic novels for elementary students (or young graphic novels) has been on my mind for months. Early graphic novels are what chapter books are for middle grade non-graphic novels. They're shorter (typically under 150 pages and always under 200 pages), easier to read and follow, and often super silly -- written to make you giggle. What could be better? Because kids can read a step or two above their grade level, I've also included some simpler middle grade style graphic novels for more voracious elementary readers. I've arranged these graphic novels from "youngest" to "oldest" reading levels. You'll find the recommended reading age at the end of my descriptions.

Fabulous Graphic Novels for 9 Year Olds

I don't know about you, but I LOVE graphic novels. Good graphic novels are immersive, engaging, and easy to finish in no time. Some parents, teachers and librarians worry about the value of graphic novels for kids, but research has shown them to be even more effective than prose for vocabulary building. Nine-year-olds are older elementary pupils with stronger reading skills and perhaps a greater appreciation for longer stories. This list is a fantastic resource if you're on the hunt for more graphic novels for 9-year-olds. Of course, these books are perfect for most kids between ages 8 and 12, but they are likely to be a hit especially with 9-year-olds!

Graphic Novels 11 Year Olds Love!

Many kids fly through graphic novels (because they tend to have fewer words than prose novels), and parents and teachers may have a hard time keeping their kids stocked with enough supply. If that's you, this list (and my other graphic novel lists) will help. I've rounded up graphic novels with slightly more mature subject matter and complex plots for the 11 year olds in your life. If you have younger kids who read at a higher level, they could definitely read these and handle the subject matter as none of the books are particularly graphic (ha!).

Graphic novels are exciting for every age group, but kids ages 8-12 have such an impressive range of options. That is why I'm sharing this list of graphic novels for 10-year-olds. We also have a list for 9 year olds if you want to have a browse. I tried to have a good mix of books, and of course most kids between the ages of 9-12 can read and enjoy the stories on this list, but I think these are just perfect for the 10-year-old crowd. You'll find a solid mix of realistic, historical and fantasy choices with a few of them releasing later in 2025.

The best middle grade graphic novel series work to keep readers engaged -- like any other tween series -- because they're already oriented. They know the characters and the world in the particular series, so it's easier to keep going. So while I already have a list of middle grade graphic novels, I thought it would be fun to keep all of the series in one post! I'm not the biggest non-fiction reader, but I will always say yes to a good graphic memoir. Honestly, I'll read pretty much anything formatted as a graphic novel. How can anyone resist? If you're trying to get your kids to read more non-fiction, memoirs, or just books in general, try tempting them with a graphic novel.
