Every summer, Libro.fm does a GREAT summer audiobook sale and I always end up snagging several audiobooks I've been wanting to listen to because the prices are so good -- all under $5 with many less than $1. I have a whole post all about Libro.fm and why I love it, but basically, I like supporting indie bookstores; the audio quality is better than Everand (which I also love), and you can download the audiobook files and load them onto your Yoto player if you have one.

Libro.Fm is doing a massive audiobook sale this year, and there are so many wonderful (and NEW) books on sale. I wrote a whole post about how Libro.Fm works here. Typically, these audiobook sales can be full of classics and backlist titles, so I'm excited to see a couple of my 2024 favorite middle grade books on sale. The audiobooks on this list are those I've either read and loved or ones I bought during the sale! Pretty much all of them are under $10, with many under $5 if you're a Libro.Fm member.

This year was my year of audiobooks. With Everand (formerly Scribd) and Libro.fm (including the ALC program — more about that here) combined, I flew through 5-10 audiobooks nearly every month! Still, finding a truly phenomenal audiobook production isn’t an easy feat. Many audiobooks are just fine (especially if they aren’t full-cast or dual narration).

15 Best Audiobooks for 2nd Graders

Audiobooks can be absolutely delightful for younger readers. They're a great way for kids who may not yet be strong readers to experience chapter books and longer texts they otherwise wouldn't be able to access. Audiobooks also help keep kids company and work well as a read-along guide for illustrated books, so kids can listen to the audio while they follow along in their own books. Whatever your use case, I have some fun audiobooks for 2nd graders today. This list includes funny books, spunky protagonists, and many, many series to keep your kids listening for a long time.

The Best Audiobooks Narrated by the Authors

Listening to audiobooks is such an enjoyable experience for me. But -- especially for non-fiction titles -- listening to audiobooks narrated by the authors is on a whole other level! That's actually how I got into listening to audiobooks. I think memoirs on audio are a great first step to enjoying the format. Fortunately, though, I've also found a handful of fiction titles narrated WELL by the authors, if you'd also like to try those with/without your kids.

The Best Full Cast Audiobooks

If you've been around here for a minute, you would know that I love audiobooks. My favorite kinds of audiobooks are full-cast audiobooks. Technically, a full-cast audiobook is one where each narrating character's perspective is read by a different narrator. Full-cast audiobooks are perfect for books with multiple narrators or perspectives. They're also commonly used for graphic novel narrations (which can be a lot of fun). For this list, I've curated the best full-cast audiobooks for kids (of all ages) and adults. If you're new to audiobooks, these are great to start with because they're fun -- almost like an audio drama!

With an onslaught of great middle grade books to read, my favorite way to get through young adult literature is YA audiobooks! As you know by now, my sweet spot is contemporary, realistic YA and that's what you'll find on this list. The joy of audiobooks is tied to the quality of the narrator(s) and how they bring the story to life. The narrators of these YA audiobooks get pronunciations right and have superb voice acting skills.
