Early graphic novels are what chapter books are for middle grade non-graphic novels. They're shorter (typically under 150 pages and always under 200 pages), easier to read and follow, and often super silly -- written to make you giggle. What could be better? Because kids can read a step or two above their grade level, I've also included some simpler middle grade style graphic novels for more voracious elementary readers. I've arranged these graphic novels from "youngest" to "oldest" reading levels. You'll find the recommended reading age at the end of my descriptions.

I hate that there's no browsable catalog to know exactly which books are available. You can only search on your Kindle if you have an Amazon Kids+ account. I've done the hard work for you and found several great options (including some I've read and many I haven't) for ages 6-8. Some of these are traditional chapter books (super short chapters under 150 pages) while others are young middle grade books that will work for readers ages 7-9.

Sometimes teachers and parents focus too much on teaching kids to pronounce words, and not enough on enjoying stories. Chapter books are a great next step once your child starts to want longer stories. You can either read them to your kids or let them read on their own. I once read the entire Ralph S. Mouse book to a group of kids aged 6 to 13. It was a hit. That's why it's on this list. This list includes 25 of the best chapter books, most of which I've read, and others which friends have rated highly. I've included both classic and contemporary picks, and many of these are series. I hope you find one you or a kiddo in your life will love.

The I Can Read book series are just one brand of early readers, but I like them because the stories are engaging and diverse, which can help to foster a love for reading at an early age.
