If you're looking to break out of reading the same books aloud with your 3rd graders, today's post is for you. True, you'll find a few "classics" on this list, but I'm also hoping to gently nudge you into trying some stellar newer books that will appeal just as much or even more to your 3rd grade readers. These are the books that work for independent reading, but are phenomenal as a class readaloud. They're engaging, fast-paced, and are packed with learnings that teachers like to impart, such as kindness, empathy, community, and perseverance.

They also love to be entertained and still enjoy read alouds. 25 Chapter Books & Young Middle Grade Books for 3rd Graders

Just for reference, in the States, third graders are generally about eight years old. If you're fortunate, you may already have a big reader on your hands who isn't afraid to shoot for younger middle-grade titles like some of those on this list. Typically, though most eight-year-olds prefer smaller chapter books, under 150 pages, with lots of pictures and larger fonts than the typical middle-grade book. Kids at this age also like series -- they want to remain in the same universe for as long as possible, so most of the books on this list are part of series.

These chapter books for third graders are good for independent reading and also for readalouds! All except one are heavily illustrated, and I've tried to include picks for a variety of interests.

I love recommending books for 3rd graders because this is the prime age for new readers. By the 3rd grade, most kids are confident readers and very into book series. On this list of book series for 3rd graders, I've included some of my favorites, which means mostly realistic fiction with lovable protagonists you can root for. Although all the books on this list are fully illustrated, some would also work for more advanced readers and a few for those who aren't as confident yet.

Third grade is such an exciting age group for reading because most kids get into chapter books around this age. If you're looking for books for 3rd grade boys who are resistant to titles that don't have boys on the cover, this is the list for you. As readers, we all know that kids can and should be open to reading any and all good books, irrespective of their gender, but sometimes it's not that simple. Often, newer readers (with unconscious bias) are drawn to books with characters who look like them on the cover, and because we want them to fall in love with reading, we need to meet them where they are. That said, these are some of my favorite 3rd grade books that appeal to boys the most!
