A few of them still like to see some pictures in their chapter books, but others can handle reading up to 200 pages of fiction (or more). Whatever your fourth-grader's reading level, I'm pretty sure you'll find a couple or more books for them among these 50 chapter books for fourth-graders. I've separated those that feature illustrations from the chapter books that do not.

The non-illustrated chapter books I've chosen are technically "middle-grade books" for ages 8-12. But these picks are well suited for younger readers because they feature younger protagonists, fewer pages of text, less intense subject matter, and a "young" voice.

30+ Middle Grade Books 6th Graders Love https://readingmiddlegrade.com/books-for-sixth-graders/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/books-for-sixth-graders/#comments Wed, 11 Jun 2025 12:04:50 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=10469 Sixth graders (and 5th graders) are my favorite tweens to recommend books to because at ages 10-12, these kids are often confident readers who are eager to explore a variety of genres. Many of them can handle problem books and really enjoy realistic fiction. Still, they continue to read their graphic novels and short books, as well as engaging series. That's why I've tried to include all of these on this list. You'll find graphic novels, realistic fiction, funny stories, short books, long books, mysteries, and even series on this list.

Wonderful Middle Grade and Teen Books for 7th Graders https://readingmiddlegrade.com/books-for-seventh-graders/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/books-for-seventh-graders/#comments Wed, 04 Jun 2025 16:53:59 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=10488 Let's face it: Older middle schoolers are reading more YA than ever before. Still, I'm happy that there are many upper middle grade books that are "cool enough" for them -- like those on this list. Seventh graders are on the brink of teenage life and may relate most strongly to books about body image, crushes, and similar topics. They're also more able to tolerate tastefully done stories about sexual harassment, domestic violence, addiction, serious mental illness, and other harsh, unpleasant realities of life. On this list, you'll find middle grade and teen books that hit all of these themes. Of course, as always mentioned, seventh graders can always read up or down. They can read and enjoy many of the books I've recommended for 6th graders and 5th graders, as well as books for 8th graders.

Young YA Books for Older Middle Schoolers https://readingmiddlegrade.com/good-books-for-14-16-year-olds/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/good-books-for-14-16-year-olds/#comments Tue, 27 May 2025 18:01:47 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=48398 Finding good books for 14-16 year olds is TOUGH. You know elementary schoolers have chapter books and tweens have middle grade books for every subject? Older teens (ages 16+) have young adult books, but what happens to the in-between teens? Those who may be too young for the grittier topics, occasional sexual content, drinking scenes, and often strong language used frequently in young adult books.

Younger teens often feel a bit lost looking for the right kinds of books for them. While many enjoy upper middle grade books, these stories might be a bit too young for the average 15-year-old. If you're looking for good books for 14-16-year-olds, this list is your best bet! I've included the sweetest YA books, several of which have no romance arc, only a few instances of strong language, and a couple of kissing scenes at best!

Chapter Books to Read Aloud with Your 3rd Grade Classroom https://readingmiddlegrade.com/3rd-grade-readalouds/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/3rd-grade-readalouds/#respond Wed, 23 Apr 2025 13:27:42 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=90328 If you're looking to break out of reading the same books aloud with your 3rd graders, today's post is for you. True, you'll find a few "classics" on this list, but I'm also hoping to gently nudge you into trying some stellar newer books that will appeal just as much or even more to your 3rd grade readers. These are the books that work for independent reading, but are phenomenal as a class readaloud. They're engaging, fast-paced, and are packed with learnings that teachers like to impart, such as kindness, empathy, community, and perseverance.

High-Interest Books I Recommend for 8th Grade Boys https://readingmiddlegrade.com/books-for-8th-grade-boys/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/books-for-8th-grade-boys/#respond Tue, 25 Mar 2025 23:46:24 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=84024 Many educators and parents tell me that as their kids get older, they read less and less for fun -- especially the boys. Today's blog post highlights a variety of books I always recommend to boys in the 8th grade. You'll find that they're all high interest, very readable, and have a strong sense of plot. They also have a strong thread of action and good pacing to keep even super busy or reluctant readers flipping the pages. I've provided suggestions across several categories including mystery, dystopia, and coming-of-age, so you can find some solid options for your readers.

20 Books to Hand to the 8th Graders in Your Life https://readingmiddlegrade.com/books-for-eighth-graders/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/books-for-eighth-graders/#comments Fri, 28 Feb 2025 12:43:19 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=11719 The best books for eight graders (who are usually around age 13) are upper middle-grade and young YA titles! That's what you find recommended on this list. Still, I tend to lean toward conservative choices, especially for kids who are still under age 16. So I've included books about crushes, body image, sexual harassment and consent, and identity. Many of these books are personal favorites that I would certainly hand to my favorite 13 year olds.

15 Books to Read Next with Your 4th Grade Book Club https://readingmiddlegrade.com/book-club-books-for-4th-graders/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/book-club-books-for-4th-graders/#respond Tue, 04 Feb 2025 12:19:32 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=90576 Whether you're looking for your next pick for a class book club, mother-daughter book club, or homeschooling pod book club, or kids' book club, I've rounded up some exceptional recommendations for the 4th graders in your life. For reference, most 4th graders are between 9-10 years old, and you'll find options for less avid readers who need shorter books with simpler plots and books for advanced readers who can handle longer books and more nuanced themes. A couple of the books on this list are even illustrated!

20 Perfect Books to Readaloud to Your 2nd Grade Classroom https://readingmiddlegrade.com/books-to-readaloud-to-your-2nd-grade-classroom/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/books-to-readaloud-to-your-2nd-grade-classroom/#respond Mon, 13 Jan 2025 09:58:32 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=85850 My criteria for a fabulous second grade read aloud is that it has to be grade level appropriate in content while still being interesting, fun and something that might be a bit difficult for an independent read. I love to introduce my second graders to series and authors they will love, but might not yet be able to tackle on their own. The read aloud should be long enough to last for a few weeks, but not so long it drags through half the year. You know your second grader (or second grade class) the best, so let this list guide and inspire you!

Captivating Book Series for 4th Graders https://readingmiddlegrade.com/book-series-for-4th-graders/ https://readingmiddlegrade.com/book-series-for-4th-graders/#respond Wed, 08 Jan 2025 17:18:59 +0000 https://readingmiddlegrade.com/?p=88569 If you're struggling to keep up with how fast your 4th graders are reading, you need book series -- stories that keep them in the same universe for several books. The books on this list are some of my favorites for 4th graders (stronger readers than 3rd graders, but perhaps not mature enough for more complex plots and heavy emotional content like 5th and 6th graders).
